Capture and Preservation of Born Digital News Media / Acopio y preservación de documentos de origen digital de medios de comunicación

Theme & sub-themes:

Libraries and cultural heritage institutions have been leaders in preserving news media content, including newspapers, news websites, and radio and television news. The 2020 IFLA International News Media Conference will explore how institutions are addressing the challenges of capturing and preserving born digital news media, preserving and building access to physical news media content, and of opening all these materials for digital access to researchers. Proposals for papers should address the main theme and related topics, including but not limited to: 

  • Preservation of audio-visual and multimedia news

  • Copyright issues related to news media preservation and access

  • Digital archives for audio-visual news media 

  • Role of the librarian, archivist, and professional in curating news media collections

  • Preservation strategies for newspapers, news websites, and radio and television news

  • Preparation of news media content for access

  • Use of news media materials by researchers

  • Web archiving of digital news sites

Other proposals relevant to the main conference theme will also be considered.

Submission Guidelines

Proposal abstracts must be submitted by 17 January 2020, must be in English or Spanish, and should clearly include:

  • Title of proposed paper

  • Abstract of proposed paper (no more than 300 words)

  • Name(s) of presenter(s) and position(s) and/or title(s)

  • Employer / affiliated institution

  • Contact information including email address and telephone number

  • Short biographical statement(s) of presenter(s)

Proposal abstracts should be submitted as MS Word files to all conference committee members:

Selected presenters will be notified by 24 January 2020. To discuss any matter relating to this Call for Papers, please contact the conference committee members listed above.

Accepted papers

  • Complete accepted papers should be 3000-6000 words in length and be an original submission not published elsewhere.

  • Complete accepted papers and accompanying presentation slides must be submitted by 14 February 2020.

  • Final papers should be written in English or Spanish.

  • The papers will be made available on the Conference Website, the News Media Section Website, and in the IFLA Library.  The papers must be under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license.

  • Approximately 15-20 minutes will be allowed for presentation of the paper.

Registration information will be posted on the Conference Website in January 2020.

The Programme Committee regrets that it has no funding to assist prospective authors, and the submission of an abstract must be on the understanding that the costs of attending the conference including registration, travel, accommodation, and other expenses, are the responsibility of the presenters of the accepted papers, or their institutions. No financial support can be provided by IFLA, but a special invitation can be issued to authors.
