Rights Retention: Exploring How the Plan S Strategy Could Apply Globally (MENA and Sub-Saharan Africa)

A key area of discussion in efforts to promote Open Access is the topic of rights retention. This focuses on the possibility for researchers to avoid signing away all their rights to publishers, but rather to keep them, and so be able to share their work online under and open licence.

The issue is a relevant one for the library field, both in terms of its impact on the availability of knowledge, and on the advice and support that librarians in academic and research institutions, and beyond, offer to users.

cOAlition S – the group of research funders behind Plan S – has proposed a Strategy on the subject. This will, at least for researchers funded by signatory organisations, have an important impact on the way authors work with the articles, chapters and books they produce.

cOAlition S is already engaging with publishers in order to encourage them to adopt rights retention themselves, but is keen to engage with librarians in order to answer questions, hear concerns and priorities, and learn how to make the Strategy workable around the world.
