Places that Care For People: Public Libraries Delivering Health and Wellbeing Outcomes

Presentation 1: Developing the Victorian Public Libraries for Health and Wellbeing Framework.

Libraries have always been a resource for their communities, but the contemporary library can also support health and wellbeing by provision of physical spaces, digital access, information, and library programmes. Jenny Mustey and Debra Rosenthal will discuss how library services across Victoria Australia worked together to create the new Libraries for Health and Wellbeing Framework and the importance of this as a strategic direction for public libraries.

Jenny has worked in the library sector for 36 years, initially in education and moved across to public libraries in 1997.  She manages a small rural library service in Northern Victoria.  Jenny is a member of the Public Libraries Victoria Executive and a representative on the Advisory Committee Public Libraries, Library Board of Victoria. Jenny is also on the Libraries for Health and Well-being Statewide Development Project Working Group.  She is an active member of ALIA and has been involved in the Library Design Awards and the ALIA mentoring program.  She was a mentor for the INELI Oceania.

Debra Rosenfeldt Head of Library Sector Engagement, State Library of Victoria Australia

Debra is an experienced senior library professional in both public and State Libraries. In her role she leads projects that support development of the state of Victoria’s (Australia) public library network. These include training, advocacy, research and strategic planning initiatives such as Libraries for Health and Wellbeing.

Presentation 2: The Tottori Prefectural Library’s programs for health and welfare – Making our community a healthier and happier place for everyone, especially those with dementia and disabilities.

The Tottori Prefectural Library has a mission to be the library that is valuable to our citizens and contributes to the community. To accomplish the mission, we have extended our discussion in how we can support people’s health as a library, and launched services and programs in the health and welfare field in close collaboration with related institutions. Also, we have been trying to create an inclusive environment where everyone can enjoy library programs and access needed information.

Presentation 3: Te Aka Mauri  – The interconnecting vine, a collaboration between Rotorua Library and Lakes DHB Children’s Health Hub

Te Aka Mauri is an NZ first collaboration between Library and Children’s health hub. Our building is designed to not only welcome but also reflect our community, celebrating our strong Māori history and connection with Te Arawa. We have a strong Youth and Early learning focus for library services, but emphasis is also placed very much on Community Led events, programmes and spaces.  We support the goals of Community Connection, Sharing and preserving Rotorua Stories, Equity of access, and lifelong learning

Speaker: Laura Marshall Director Te Aka Mauri – Kaihautū Te Aka Mauri

Laura has a long association with books and learning and is a passionate advocate for equitable inclusion and community wellbeing.  15 years’ experience as a rare and second-hand book dealer of three leading bookshops around NZ, followed by  community based roles as Commercial Manager for Rotorua Museum and Retail Lead for Totara Hospice. Laura is currently Director of Te Aka Mauri, a role that involves leading the Rotorua Library, development of community hubs and facilitation of Community  Learning Framework for Rotorua Lakes Council.

Presentation 4: Floods: Selangor Public Library Experiences

Speaker: Datin Paduka Mastura Haji Muhamad

Mastura Muhamad is the Director of the Selangor Public Library Corporation, Malaysia. A former general manager of YPM Trading & Marketing Sdn. Bhd., she was appointed library Director by the Selangor State Government in 2008. Leading the transformation of the Selangor Public Library with her rebranding strategy, the number of users in Raja Tun Uda Library, Shah Alam, increased from 418,802 in 2008-2010 to 1,550,435 in 2011-2013, then to 2,420,587 in 2014-2016, and then to 2,927,589 in 2017-2019. Under her management, Selangor Public Library has expanded to 104 libraries throughout the state including 8 mobile libraries with the latest concept.

Margaret Allen, FALIA, PSM was previously the CEO and State Librarian at the State Library of Western Australia following a 40 year career in libraries.  Margaret is also the Chair of IFLA Public Libraries Section.
