The International Literacy Association (ILA) organized an online webinar about censorship across the world which took place on 28 April 2022 from 5:00 pm ET to 6:30 pm ET.

Indeed the current censorship surge in American schools has drawn attention to the role of school librarians. However, efforts to control what materials young learners can consume extend beyond the United States and we can question the critical role school librarians everywhere play in ensuring children’s rights to read.

This webinar was organized in two parts: a round-table discussion among three speakers for 45 min following by a breakout spaces in which participants spoke about specific topics with a facilitator.

The IFLA School Libraries Section was invited to make the voice of countries outside USA, represented by Valérie Glass, the section’s chair during the round-table discussion.

During the first part of the webinar, Valérie Glass, Lucy Santos Green and Jennisen Lucas discussed the varied challenges that school librarians face around the world in different perspectives: historical , age- appropriateness, or differences between private and public schools.

The recording is available on Zoom through June 2022.
