Șirna Public Library from Romania — an Empowered Green Library

The inspiring story of the small rural library of Șirna, Romania and its path towards a more sustainable development of its community started in 2014 with the IFLA ENSULIB recognition of the library’s initial efforts. Using the example from Șirna, this webinar will walk you through the process of empowering small libraries to connect to global conversations, join international networks of Green Libraries, learn together with their communities to create new opportunities for growth and development, and get support from available regional funding. Examples of activities that will be illustrated have been inspired from participants in IFLA Green libraries network, by job shadowing and sessions at the National and University Library in Zagreb, by observing the Diechman Bjørvika Library in Oslo and supported through an Erasmus+ European Program.

Speakers

Iuliana-Camelia Pîrvu

Iuliana-Camelia Pîrvu has been the librarian of Șirna Communal Library, Prahova County, Romania for more than 32 years. In 2014 she won a 20,000 euro award from WWF for installing solar panels on her library and in 2018 her work with youth was recognized as her library was on the short list for the Green Library Award. She participated in Erasmus+ projects and in 2020 she wrote and won an Erasmus+ Project Lib4Green. For how she managed the project in 2022 the Romanian Erasmus+ Agency awarded her with Erasmus+ 2022 Trophy. 

 

Claudia Șerbănuță

Claudia Șerbănuță is currently the president of the Communities of the Future Association, a member of Wikimedians of Romania and Moldova and a member of the Green Council of Șirna Public Library. She completed her Ph.D in Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2017 and from 2014 to 2016 she was the manager of the National Library of Romania. She has experience coordinating Black Sea regional projects and implementing  innovative public services for large networks of libraries.
