UN Summit of the Future and Action Weekend
The Summit of the Future is the climax of five years of work focused on the United Nations system can work most effectively to make for a more peaceful, fairer, more sustainable planet. IFLA will be there, underlining the role of knowledge, culture and libraries in making this happen.
For the UN’s 75th birthday, its Secretary-General Antonio Guterres chose to focus less on celebration, and more on how to get ready for the next quarter century. Faced with unprecedented global challenges, as well as divisions and polarisation that make cooperation difficult, he aimed to focus attention on what could help realise the potential of multilateralism.
In particular, over half way through the 2030 Agenda, it is clear that there remains a huge amount still to do.
This work has come to a climax with the Summit of the Future, which will be the occasion to agree a Pact for the Future. This is set to be a landmark document, identifying new commitments and actions for the coming years. In particular, it aims to strengthen the UN’s ability to deliver on the 2030 Agenda.
IFLA will be present at the Summit and the preceding action weekend, highlighting the need to make sure that information, knowledge and culture are recognised and supported. In particular, we will be supporting a Culture2030Goal online side event at 1pm UTC on Friday 20 September (register here), and an in-person event organised by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network.
