Bibliographic Control in Indonesia: Innovation and Technology Development

Background

Law Number 13 of 2018 concerning the Handover of Savings for Printed and Recorded Works Article 23, states that:

(1) The National Library and the Provincial Library carry out processing of the Handover Savings Collection;

(2) The results of the processing as referred to in paragraph (1) are used as one of the bases for compiling the Indonesian national bibliography and regional bibliography.

Based on this, the National Library of the Republic of Indonesia continues to progress in the preparation of Indonesia’s national bibliography, and also, regional bibliographies for provincial libraries.

Currently, the preparation of Indonesia’s national bibliography is followed by the development of technological innovation through the INLIS application based on the Resource Description & Access (RDA) standard and MARC metadata, and accessed through Beranda | BNI Perpustakaan Nasional RI (perpusnas.go.id)

National Bibliography of Indonesia

Bibliografi Nasional Indonesia (BNI) is a list of publications published in the territory of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia at a certain point of time. BNI is compiled comprehensively and systematically, published quarterly every year, namely in March, June, September and December. The bibliographic data collected in BNI is then stored in the National Library of Indonesia’s database and the published results are disseminated to various agencies and institutions. The preparation of the national bibliography currently uses Resource Description & Access (RDA) and the IndoMARC metadata standard which is the development of MARC 21.

Technological Innovation

From 2020, the results of the compilation of Indonesia’s national bibliography, apart from being issued in print, are also made available in digital form (pdf) and can be accessed through the Manuscript | BNI National Library of Indonesia (perpusnas.go.id). National bibliographic publications that can be downloaded include: BNI Volume 68 Number 1 of 2020, BNI Volume 68 Number 2 of 2020, BNI Volume 68 Number 3 of 2020, BNI Volume 68 Number 4 Year 2020. BNI Volume 69 Number 1 of 2020, BNI Volume 69 Number 2 of 2020. The bibliography can be accessed through  Beranda | BNI Perpustakaan Nasional RI (perpusnas.go.id)

The National Library of the Republic Indonesia also develops technological innovations related to publishing in Indonesia and managing collections in the Library. The technological innovations developed can be accessed through the portal:

1. ISBN Portal

The ISBN Portal is an ISBN online service that contains service guides, books in print, and statistics on publishing developments that can be accessed via e-mail: Beranda | BNI Perpustakaan Nasional RI (perpusnas.go.id)

2. National Union Catalog Portal

Katalog Induk Nasional (KIN) is a catalogue database that collects catalogue data from provincial, district/city and university libraries. The database can be accessed through: KIN – Katalog Induk Nasional (perpusnas.go.id)
