This call is an invitation to participate in a one-hour session at the WLIC 2022 in Dublin, Ireland, with 3 speakers who will address Open Practices: Science Engagement.  Consideration for diversity will be honored that cover practices such as different subject areas in the sciences, regions of the world, scientific publishing, funding mandates, and how to break down and remove any of the systemic or structural barriers that prevent more open practices in the sciences.

WLIC will be an in-person international congress with the expectation that all presenters will attend the WLIC in Dublin, pay the registration fee and submit a PowerPoint presentation of no more than 12 slides by July 1, 2022.  IFLA will not assume any costs for attendance including registration fee.

Following the launch of the Open Access movement, efforts were increased to make many information resources more transparent and accessible to wider communities of users.  This includes Open Access, Open Data, Open Science, Open Peer Review and other open practices that increase science communication and promote collaboration.  These open practices have fundamentally changed our scientific institutions and educational pathways worldwide particularly in how scientists conduct and share their work.

Library professionals recognize that despite decades of openness in certain areas of the scientific community and world, not all open science practices are equally accessible to all scientists. This session explores how science librarians embrace and extend scholarly communication to open practices in the sciences. How we learn about new opportunities and the ways we confront some of the existing biases and inequalities while striving to promote more resources and services to make science more open, accessible, and inclusive for everyone is key.

Possible topics may include (but are not limited to):

  • Diversity and inequity within Open Science
  • How libraries are encouraging Open Science adoption among generationally, disciplinary, and culturally diverse populations
  • Governance over Open Science and open publishing
  • Accessibility issues in Open Science
  • Fostering more open relationships in scholarly publishing across science and other related disciplines such as public policy, and clinical content
  • Intersections between open practices and privacy concerns
  • Open practices to combat misinformation
  • Opportunities for more open activities in the sciences
  • Technologies, infrastructures & innovations that drive Open Science
  • Experience with new information resources and products that support Open Science

This session is co-hosted by the Health & Biosciences Libraries Section, Knowledge Management Section, & the Digital Humanities/Digital Scholarship SIG.
