The IFLA Art Libraries Section (ARTLIB) is composed of librarians from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and institutions. And, like many of you, our members feel that a highlight of the year is the WLIC, where we gather to share ideas and experiences. Reacting to the news that there would be no Congress in 2024, we had internal conversations about what we could feasibly work on to bring value to our members. We had many ideas and fruitful exchanges, but one single interest always arose: we wanted to connect.

We sought collaboration opportunities with other groups, rightly assuming that we were not unique in our desire to come together. Then, something extraordinary happened: we discovered that the Rare Books and Special Collections Section (RBSC) had already been busy planning an exciting event. Additionally, they were gracious enough to extend an invitation to our Section to work together to make this a reality.

With a grant from Spain’s Ministry of Culture, as well as the support of other generous sponsors, several IFLA Sections have come together and are pleased to organize the International Library Conference titled “Culture, Knowledge, and Community” in Barcelona, Spain, October 6-9, 2024.

Our members were enthusiastic to assist in helping put this event together, and we have been deeply impressed by the work and organization of the planning committee. Stars aligned: several of our members will be in Barcelona attending the International Conference of Art Libraries, which is serendipitously happening a few days before our event.

RBSC and ARTLIB have planned a stimulating program for October 8, “Censorship and Heritage Collections.” We are eagerly anticipating the learning and gathering that will take place as our Sections collaborate now and, we hope, in the future as well.
