UNESCO will mark the launch of the  International Decade of Indigenous languages on 13 December 2022 through a hybrid in-person and virtual High-level Celebration.

UNESCO, in co-operation with the United Nations Department for Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA), the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), and the members of Global Task Force for Making a Decade of Action for Indigenous Languages, are organising this event to:

  • Mark the launch of the International Decade of Indigenous languages and raise awareness among all stakeholders on the critical situation of Indigenous languages around the world
  • Encourage international cooperation, sharing of experiences and creation of multi-stakeholder partnerships for the preservation, revitalization and promotion of Indigenous languages,
  • Reflect on immediate actions to be taken by all actors to implement the Global Action Plan of the International Decade of Indigenous Languages [pdf]

The event will include a number of Multi-stakeholder round tables that explore a variety of topics, from education and knowledge creation to access to information and the role of multilingualism in sustainable development.

For libraries, taking part in this event can help inform future actions that align with the Global Action Plan.
