On behalf of IFLA, I want to send strength and courage to our colleagues in Türkiye and Syria, in the wake of the terrible destruction and the sufferings of the people created by the recent earthquakes. I feel for the people in these countries who have lost not only their homes and belongings but also many people who were close to them.

Such a disaster does not spare cultural heritage institutions. We know that there are libraries in the region, and they will undoubtedly have been affected, too.

Yet libraries have not been passive. I have already heard moving examples of how librarians, both in the countries affected and beyond, have mobilised to send support and help.

As with any major disaster, IFLA is in touch with our members in the countries, and monitoring for any news of damage to libraries. We welcome information that can be shared with UNESCO and other partners who can provide practical support on the ground. We also stand ready to work, through our networks, to share knowledge and other resources which can help in responding.

I am sending my wishes for a stable and swift recovery from this horrible experience.

With my deepest empathy,

Barbara Lison
IFLA President
