Governing Board Elections 2011-2013
Statement of Candidacy
For the position of Governing Board Member 2011-2013
Genevieve Clavel-Merrin (Switzerland)
National and International Cooperation
Swiss National Library
I am active in IFLA, especially as Secretary and later Information Coordinator for the National Libraries Section, seeking to build strong contacts across sections. With Bibliographies and ALP and colleagues from Mali, I have worked on organizing and funding the recent International Seminar on national bibliographies for the national libraries of French-speaking Africa. Fundraising for this across different sectors in and outside the library world has helped promote our activities and create alliances with other sectors. I wish to build on such initiatives, create similar opportunities and encourage more co-operation between the IFLA sections and core activities such as ALP.
In the World Summit on the Information Society and its follow-up work, I have been privileged as one of IFLA's representatives to be able to promote libraries at the heart of the Information Society. I will encourage colleagues around the world to continue to advocate our vital role in providing and promoting equitable access to information, and the importance of IFLA in its role as a capacity builder in this field. The WSIS follow-up activity underlines a priority I see in encouraging continuity in action so that we build on our achievements, in advocacy in this case but also in training and awareness raising activities supported by IFLA.
Living and working in a multilingual environment, I am sensitive to the need to promote multicultural and multilingual approaches to information access, respecting diversity and local realities while seeking common ground in standards. I aim to help IFLA and its president achieve their objectives here, especially that of furthering the inclusion of multilingualism in IFLA.
Working in the GB and with the PC I will build on experience gained to help realize IFLA's strategic objectives over the next 2 years in full awareness of the financial constraints facing us all.
