The IFLA Information Technology Section, IFLA Artificial Intelligence (AI) Special Interest Group, and IFLA Big Data Special Interest Group are pleased to announce an upcoming international virtual event focused on Information Technology (IT) and Libraries. This webinar held across multiple time zones seeks to provide a snapshot of IT challenges and opportunities in libraries and provide regional perspectives on issues.

Proposals are encouraged for presentations, facilitated discussion sessions, panels, or workshops, on all aspects of IT and libraries, archives, and information centers. Sections are also welcome to propose updates or discussion sessions on IT-aligned work (example: digital humanities, data in libraries, metadata and cataloging technologies, and AI work). Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • IT management, training and policy issues
  • text mining, machine learning, natural language processing, AI
  • robotics and automation
  • digital transformation
  • technology sustainablity and equitable access
  • communication and collaboration platforms
  • data management and analytics

Regional teams and IT Section/SIG members have also put forth the following subtopics that refine the above list. We are seeking presentations that cover the timely issues of:

  • Immersive technologies to enhance user experience
  • Accessibility of technology, services, and metadata, accessibility audits and programmatic approaches
  • Digitization and open source repositories; including metadata management
  • Digital preservation strategies and approaches
  • Library data infrastructure support for large language models (LLM)
  • Indigenous knowledge projects for AI
  • Big Data analytics for decision making
  • Technology perspectives from national libraries, parliamentary libraries, law libraries and other archives and documentation centers
  • Cybersecurity and access management

The webinar across multiple time zones will bring together leading experts, researchers, librarians, and technology enthusiasts to share knowledge, exchange ideas, and envision the future of libraries.

All proposals should be in English and include:

  1. Name, title, institution, country, and email of speaker(s)
  2. Title of proposed presentation
  3. Abstract of presentation (max 300 words)
  4. Format (presentation, panel, workshop, demonstration, facilitated discussion, etc.)
  5. Requested time slot (15 minutes, 30 minutes, 45 minutes, other)
  6. Brief biographical statement about each speaker (max 100 words)

All proposals and presentation slides will be required to be in English. Zoom tools such as recording, transcription, and translation will be available.

Important dates

26 July, 2024 – Proposals are due (extended deadline)

29 July, 2024 – Notification of acceptance

16 August – Presentation slides submitted

28 August – 24 Hours of Global IT Event (begins at 10:00 am AEST / 27 August 5:00 pm PST)

At least one of the authors must be present to deliver the presentation and participate in Q & A during the webinar.

All presentation slides will be made available online via the IFLA Library under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. Longer versions of presentations can be submitted for inclusion in the IT Section newsletter (TILT). We look forward to your proposals and your participation.
