Satellite meeting focus

We envisage a workshop-style meeting with a practical focus, aimed at improving the quality of international and comparative LIS research. The emphasis will be on how to do good research, particularly the nuts and bolts of researching internationally. Any social science/information science research methods can be applied in international and comparative librarianship, but we aim to raise awareness of the potential impact of national, linguistic and cultural differences.

The target audience for the meeting will include post-graduate students, post-doc and other researchers, faculty supervising graduate research, editors of LIS journals, and other interested LIS professionals.


We anticipate that contributions will cover topics such as:

  • Theory and research paradigms in international and internationally comparative research
  • Insights from other international/comparative disciplines  (e.g. Comparative Education or Global Studies Education; Transnational sociology; Political science; Transnational Business Studies; Organizational Anthropology; Media/Communication Studies)
  • Methodology for international and internationally comparative research: including choices between quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods approaches
  • Comparative method: aspects peculiar to comparative research design and research strategy.
  • Ethics in international research
  • International research collaboration
  • Open research data

The language of the event will be English. Simultaneous interpretation will not be available, but contributions in other IFLA languages may be considered if relevant arrangements can be made in consultation with the Organizing Committee.

Submission and selection process

The programme will include both invited papers and the following categories of submissions:

Category A: 

Papers reporting specific projects in international and internationally comparative research: These papers should focus on methodological decisions and issues rather than on findings. Time allowed for each presentation: 15 minutes. Presentations to be followed by panel discussion and response to questions from the floor.

Category B: 

Papers on general aspects of international and internationally comparative research: A limited number of general papers on topics such as those listed above. Time allowed for each presentation: 20 minutes plus 5 minutes for questions and discussion.

Submission requirements for Categories A and B:

The proposed paper should be an original submission not published elsewhere. Proposals will be evaluated by a panel appointed by the IFLA Library Theory and Research Section. Once a proposal has been accepted, the text of the presentation should be submitted by the deadline stated below.

  • Title of paper
  • Summary of paper (300—500 words)
  • Speaker’s name, address, telephone and fax numbers, professional affiliation, email address and biographical note (40 words)

Submission of text:

It is intended that selected papers will be submitted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal issue or in a book in the IFLA Publications series.

By 7 July 2020 an abridged version of no more than 3000 words, suitable for inclusion in the IFLA Library, should be submitted to:

After the Conference authors will be asked to provide the full and final versions of their papers (4000—7000 words) to be submitted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal issue or in a book.

Category C: 

Cases and queries for a research clinic: Students and researchers are invited to submit brief presentations (10-15 minutes) on research currently in progress, identifying challenges and problems for group discussions moderated by experienced researchers.  Examples of such issues include questions about quantitative and qualitative research approaches, strategies for international comparisons, sources of data, and reporting research. Depending on the number of participants, a number of clinics could be held concurrently for small groups.

Submission requirements for Category C:

A less formal selection process will be followed for the “cases and queries” session. A brief statement of the challenge or problem (max. 200—300 words) should be submitted by Saturday 7 March 2020 to:

Provide a title and details of the speaker as for Categories A and B. Notification of acceptance or rejection will follow by Saturday 4 April 2020.

If their cases or queries are accepted for the Satellite Conference, speakers will be asked to present them at the session. After the session, cases or queries may be selected for publication by the editorial team. For each one, an outline will be published together with a summary of the discussion. Arrangements for their submission will be discussed at the end of the Satellite Conference

Arrangements for attendance and presentation

At least one of the paper’s authors must be present to deliver a summary of the paper during the Satellite Meeting.

The paper must be an original submission not presented or published elsewhere. All papers that are presented at the WLIC 2020 will be made available online via the IFLA Library under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license.

Authors of accepted papers must complete the IFLA Authors’ Permission Form.

All expenses for attending the Satellite Meeting (eg. travel, accommodation, etc.) are the responsibility of the authors/presenters. No financial support can be provided by IFLA.
