The city of Barcelona, Spain will host Culture, Knowledge, and Community: An International Library Conference from 6-10 October, 2024.

 

Along with several other IFLA sections, the Rare Books & Special Collections Section and Art Libraries Section is happy to announce our collaborative participation in this conference. On October 8th, 2024, our two sections will host Censorship and Heritage Collections, a free hybrid symposium dedicated to exploring the historical and contemporary practice of censorship in documentary heritage. Evidence of censorship can be seen in many global collections, including physical defacement or redaction, as well as the creation of segregated collections with restricted access. The practice continues today. As libraries become sites of increased politicization, institutions that steward cultural heritage collections have witnessed an increased pressure to ban books and restrain public displays on a variety of topics. These often include targeted censorship surrounding books and collections by or about members of the LGBTQIA+ community, people of color, Indigenous populations, as well as religious and/or political minority groups. This symposium will address these issues with talks that range from historical censorship in Colonial Mexico to modern challenges to publishing in North Korea.
