Dr. Herman Liebaers, 1919-2010

On 9 November 2010, former IFLA President Herman Liebaers passed away at the age of 91. In 1956, after having been the Librarian of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) from 1954-1956, Liebaers was appointed Director-General of the Belgian National Library Albert I (Brussels). From 1973 until 1981 he was Marshal of the Royal Household of King Baudouin of Belgium.

Herman Liebaers was President of IFLA from 1969 until 1974; he was appointed an Honorary President in 1974. During his time as IFLA President, he formed a now legendary unique tandem with then Secretary General Margreet Wijnstroom.
