IFLA Newsletter, September 2024: The Future
25 September 2024
The message below accompanies the September 2024 edition of the IFLA Newsletter.
Welcome to IFLA’s September 2024 Newsletter, focused on The Future.
We are less than a week away from the start of the IFLA Information Futures Summit, which will take place in Brisbane, Australia. A new type of event for IFLA, this is designed to be an opportunity to explore the factors that will shape the future of information and knowledge. Our goal here is to activate our field to influence this future for the better.
This action matters. We know from our practice every day that information and knowledge can be life-changers. The UN’s Pact for the Future, which will imminently be finalised, highlights right at the beginning both the importance of information and the need for effective management. And this is a task that naturally falls to libraries as a pre-existing, far-reaching, public-interest infrastructure. The challenge for us is building awareness and understanding of this role.
Libraries’ contribution to development and how IFLA can help maximise this is also at the heart of our new Strategy. This will be launched at the Information Futures Summit, but we were happy to share extracts during our Townhalls last week.
In this edition of the newsletter, we therefore look forward to the discussions that will happen at the Information Futures Summit, as well as the latest news from our policy and advocacy related to sustainable development and more. You can also find updates from our professional units and advisory committees, as well as news about research that will support our work at the regional level.
Finally, don’t forget to read about opportunities for you to participate in our activities, as well as events in the coming weeks, and to welcome new members.
Happy reading!
