Passing of a Friend, Colleague & Standing Committee Member

By Viviana Quiñones,

Dear colleagues,

It is in shock and with great sadness that we must announce the sudden decease, in an accident, of Maha Alwan, member of our Standing Committee.

A very special person is gone. An ardent promoter of reading, she created the Public Library of Mtein, in Lebanon, that became a model in the country for its collections and its programs; she worked for the National Library and was also a trainer of librarians in Lebanon and abroad. She was a very active IFLA member, participating with papers in conference sessions but also in the section’s projects, contributing – among others – to better knowledge of Lebanese children’s literature at the international level. She was preparing her nomination for a second term in our Standing Committee.

But it is Maha as a person that we shall miss very much. A wonderful, fine, rare person: kind, warm, discreet but full of life, open-minded, smiling always, deeply interested in others… As SC members said, "it was a joy to spend time in her company », because she had a « very intelligent heart ».

Our thoughts are with her family.
