BSLA Projects in Africa

The following projects are part of the regional approach to Building Strong Library Associations 2013-2016 in Africa.

Botswana

Botswana Library Association (BLA)

Project

  • Botswana: Governance restructure and regional benchmarking, Botswana Library Association
    Implemented 2015

Project objectives

  • Drafting a statute for the recognition of Botswana Library Association by parliament. Build awareness of BLA and enhance leadership and sustainability.

Cameroon

The Cameroon National Library Association (ABADCAM)

Project

  • Building Strong Library Associations in French Speaking Countries in Central and West Africa (Cameroon, Gabon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Chad,  Senegal, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Benin,  Mali, Madagascar)
    Implemented 2015

Project objectives

  • To establish networking and strategic partnership through capacity building and provide advocacy and marketing training.

Swaziland

Swaziland Library and Information Association (SWALA)

Project

  • Strategic Planning Workshop for the Swaziland Library Association (SWALA)
    Implemented 2015 

Project objectives

  • Formulate a vision and mission for SWALA. Establish strategic initiatives and action plans in preparation for the upcoming SCECSAL 2016

Uganda

Uganda Library and Information Association (ULIA)

Projects

  • Membership drive and retention project, Uganda Library and Information Association
    Implemented 2015
  • Constitutional Review and development of by-laws for the improvement of governance and management performance for ULIA
    Implemented 2015

Project objectives

  • Draft National Information and Communication Technology Policy by bringing together executive members of Library Information Services, regional government officials and ULIA members to formulate a five year plan that will help design a constitution for ULIA.

Zambia

Zambia Library and Information Association (LIAZ)

Project

  • Advocacy and strategic planning, Zambia Library and Information Association,  Implemented 2015

Project objectives

  • Develop a strategic plan that will help the association improve national policies that affect libraries and promote professional standards within zambian libraries. Create standard guidelines so that all libraries are work parallel with service delivery

Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe Library Association (ZIMLA)

Projects

  • Strategic Planning Workshop for the Zimbabwe Library Association
    Implemented 2014
  • Advocacy Workshop to Revise and Include Libraries and Access to Information for all in Draft National Information and Communication Technology Policy
    Implemented 2015

Project objectives

  • Main objectives of these projects were to create a new vision, mission and values. Improve strategic planning through forming initiatives and action plans with achievable targets. Improve advocacy skills and engage with policy makers and raise awareness of policies that affect library information services.
