IFLA WLIC 2018 satellite meetings
In conjunction with the recent IFLA WLIC 2018 held in Kuala Lumpur, Satellite Meetings (SMs) were held throughout Malaysia and neighbouring countries either before or after the Congress. These Meetings were organized by the various IFLA Sections/Special Interest Groups (SIGs) in partnership with local host organizations. Through these SMs, the IFLA Sections/SIGs had more time to focus their discussions on specific topics. It also provided an opportunity for them to engage with the locals who were not be able to attend the Congress or are involved in other IFLA-related activities. Most of the SMs took place within Kuala Lumpur or at most, within 3 hours’ flight travel time or 6 hours' over-land travel time to Kuala Lumpur.
Even though IFLA has 44 Sections and 17 SIGs, not every Section/SIG holds a SM every year. For this year’s Congress, 17 SMs were held. Of these, 4 SMs were jointly organized by 2 professional units. One SM each was held in Calcutta, India and Singapore. Of the15 held in Malaysia, 10 were in Kuala Lumpur, and 1 each in Bangi, Salak Tinggi, Shah Alam, Georgetown and Kuching. Each SM has its own theme which reflects the theme of this year’s Congress – Transform Libraries, Transform Societies. All the SMs were held before the Congress except that of the Indigenous Matters Section which was held after the Congress.
All the SMs were well attended by both the local and international participants.
