Special Session on the Future of Culture

11 – 15 November 2019

Durban, South Africa

IFLA will be represented by IFLA President Christine Mackenzie

United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) represents and defends the interests of local governments on the world stage, regardless of the size of the communities they serve. Headquartered in Barcelona, the organisation’s stated mission is: "To be the united voice and world advocate of democratic local self-government, promoting its values, objectives and interests, through cooperation between local governments, and within the wider international community."

The World Summit of Local and Regional Leaders, convened by UCLG, is the largest gathering of mayors, presidents of associations, councillors, and local and regional practitioners from around the world. It is also the World Summit of the most influential local and regional leaders, councillors, local governments, partners, and actors implicated in the decision making of city and community life.

This year's edition, held from 11 to15 November in Durban, South Africa, will count on a renewed format and enhanced collaboration between members and partners.

IFLA President, Christine Mackenzie will speak at a special session devoted to the "Future of Culture".  The session will focus on how cultural policies of cities can be improved and will explore "the role of networks on culture in the global conversation on culture and development."
