Tribute to Mr Antonio Santos - Director, National Library of Phillipines
The National Library of Philippines announced with deep sorrow the passing of its Director Antonio Santos on 22nd October 2015 while on a business trip to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It was caused by a heart attack. The family puts him to rest on 3rd November 2015.
He had been the Director of the National Library of the Philippines for almost 4 years, and was the Law Librarian at the University of the Philippines for more than 30 years.
We leave you with some tributes from International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) and the National Library of the Philippines:
Jennefer Nicolson (Secretary General IFLA)
Dear friends and colleagues
IFLA colleagues will remember him fondly for his leadership and his concern for the library community, and the library user community, particularly in times of suffering through recent natural disasters. We are proud to have had Tony participate in IFLA, and as one of our Leaders Associates.
All of us within the IFLA family convey to the National Library of the Philippines (NLP) staff, Philippines Library Association (PLIA) colleagues, and his family, our deepest sympathies. Tony will be missed by IFLA colleagues all around the world.
With kindest regards
Ngian Lek Choh (IFLA Governing Board)
Dear IFLA colleagues and friends from Southeast Asian region,
Mr Antonio Santos, fondly known as Tony to us in ASEAN and in our Congress of Southeast Asian Librarians (CONSAL) interactions, is one of the most vocal and proactive library directors I have known.
He speaks with passion for the profession, and is not afraid of raising difficult issues. He has led the library profession in Philippines with great commitment and dedication and he participates in all CONSAL matters with deep interest. He was also an active member of the IFLA International Leaders Programme from 2012 - 2014 and initiated a study on library copyright issues with his team.
We will dearly miss him and his voice for the profession regionally and internationally.
Ian Yap (IFLA Regional Manager for Asia & Oceania)
Dear friends from the library fraternity,
We have lost one of our beloved Librarians, who had dedicated much of his life to the betterment of libraries and the profession. Tony had believed very much in the mentoring and professional development of librarians, as a means to build the profession as a whole, that would lead to great things for libraries and the community.
My deepest condolences go to his family and friends. Our thoughts are also with the library community in Philippines, with the hope that Tony’s good work will continue to inspire others to pick up the baton and walk in the footsteps of a giant.
Jayshree Mamtora (Chair, IFLA Regional Section Committee for Asia & Oceania)
This is very sad news. My sincere thoughts and sympathies go to the family and colleagues of Antonio "Tony" Santos. Tony had been known for his exemplary contributions in IFLA and the region. To cherish a pioneer like Tony is to continue to champion professional ideals and build on the foundations set.
He will be very much remembered.
