Theme:
Art bibliography and networking information in Latin America and the Caribbean: a recent perspective

Español

Organized by:

Latin America and the Caribbean Section (IFLA/LAC) & Asociacion Mexicana de Bibliotecarios A.C.

with the collaboration of IFLA's Art Libraries Section

Location & Date:

Mexico City, Mexico
20-21 August 2011
Museo Franz Mayer

Context:

The scientific information and research data of the art bibliography of Latin America is not easily accessible through the web.  Working on solutions for improving its visibility is a collective challenge. Art libraries play a major part in this environment.  They not only collect and preserve information, they make available art bibliographies through their digital catalogues. They need to offer search-optional tools which will supplement information covered by bibliographies.

The Satellite Meeting will be a forum for Latin American and the Caribbean Art Libraries and for discussions about possible forms of collaboration and networking in the area. In this context the experiences of the Art Libraries Section are of particular interest for our Latin American colleagues.

The Meeting will give an overview of the recent state of the art in research, museum programs and cultural studies focusing on Latin American art and –of course- the role of the art libraries.

The Meeting shall focus also on interrelations and the cultural exchange between Latin America and the European/Western World, mirrored in art collections on both sides. And here again, the role of art libraries should be discussed.

  • In the field of the art of Latin America, the situation is challenging:
  • to make an emphasis of the bibliography as a knowledge diffusion
  • there is a need to get acquainted with the efforts which have been made in the compilation of art bibliography in Latin America
  • to coordinate the information available
  • to analyze the museum and gallery activities in order to elaborate bibliographies which will support them
  • to identify and protect the bibliographic patrimony of a specific city or country
  • to evaluate the bibliographic production of Latin America art books

Aims of the Satellite Meeting:

The meeting seeks to be a platform for analyzing the specific potential in the field of the art of Latin America. It aims to discuss future Solutions in order to significantly improve the discovery and access to information for research. We are aiming to explore the potential for creative and innovative supranational co-operation. Proposals relating to the needs and experiences of libraries and information entities in the field of Latin American art are welcome.
