Theme:
Libraries for law and for lawmakers

The IFLA Library and Research Services for Parliaments Section invite proposals for presentations at the Section's programme in Helsinki, 11-17 August 2012. The main theme of the Helsinki conference is "Libraries Now! - Inspiring, Surprising, Empowering".

This session will focus on the role of libraries in informing lawmakers and lawyers. Papers sharing inspiring and surprising ideas and initiatives will be especially welcome.

We are looking for up to 5 presentations for this 2 hour session.

We invite papers that:

  • Set out how lawmakers get access to and research existing law, at national and supranational (including European Union) levels
  • Explore issues relevant to research undertaken to support lawmakers during the passage of Bills
  • Consider access to and archiving of Bills, Acts and other legislation
  • Analyse case studies of inspiring and surprising innovations in thinking or practice within the field of libraries for law and lawmakers
  • Examine links between law libraries, parliamentary libraries and other institutions working in this field

Submissions

Please send an abstract (1 page or about 300 words), in English or French, of the proposed paper and relevant biographical information of the author(s)/presenter(s) by 1 March 2012 to:

Raissa Teodori, Secretary, Library and Research Services for Parliaments Section
E-mail: raissa.teodori@senato.it

Abstracts received will be reviewed by members of the Standing Committees of the two Sections. Successful proposals will be identified by 30th March 2012.

Full papers will be due by 31st May 2012 to allow time for review of papers and preparation of translations.

Additional Information

15-20 minutes will be allowed for a summary delivery of the paper during the session.

Please note that the Sections are also working together (also with Government Libraries Section and Government Information and Official Publications Section) on a session on promoting global access to law: developing an open access index for official authenticated legal information. Part 2: Europe
