Call for Papers
Science and Technology Libraries Section
Theme:
Education and training for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Medicine) librarianship: an international perspective
Focus
Papers are invited to be presented at 79th IFLA General Conference and Assembly, Singapore, in August 2013 on the theme: Education and Training for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Medicine) Librarianship: an International Perspective.
Libraries concentrating on major disciplines such as science, technology, engineering, medicine, mathematics and other subjects are gaining importance worldwide. It is more so, in developing countries where professional colleges, research and industrial institutes have been established in large number. In most academic and research libraries, it is a common practice to have designated subject librarians to provide information literacy and instruction services. Their liaison with the faculty provides opportunities to integrate libraries into the learning and research mission of their institutions.
The session will focus on the existing practices in library and information science (LIS) schools in providing subject specific education and training and the challenges associated with the recruitment of librarians with subject background in developed and developed countries.
Proposals must focus on one or more of the following topics:
- Rationale of subject knowledge for STEM Librarianship
- Key issues confronted in providing subject specific education and training in LIS schools in the country or region
- Challenges associated with the recruitment of librarians with subject background
- Post MLS opportunities for furthering subject-specific specialization in LIS schools in the country or the region
