Getting e-books into libraries is a global hot topic, and the focus of an all day e-lending session at this year’s IFLA World Library & Information Congress. Four IFLA sections – Copyright & other Legal Matters (CLM) , Management of Library Associations (MLAS), Public Libraries and Metropolitan Libraries – have joined forces to put together a comprehensive programme spanning e-book policy, e-lending principles for libraries and innovative e-lending models and advocacy initiatives around the world.

The International Leaders Programme is a two-year Programme designed to increase the cohort of leaders who can effectively represent the wider library sector in the international arena, and to develop leaders within IFLA.

The Opening Session will welcome you with traditional performances from multi-ethnic Singapore. Our Guest-of-Honour is Dr. Yaacob Ibrahim, Singapore’s Minister for Communications and Information. The keynote speaker is Prof Chan Heng Chee, Ambassador-at-Large at the Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who will speak on the theme “Are Libraries Ready for the Big Change?”.
IFLA President Ingrid Parent will also give her opening address and set the stage for the coming days.

Are Libraries ready for the Big Change?
Ambassador Chan Heng Chee is currently Ambassador-at-Large with the Singapore Foreign Ministry and Chairman of the Lee Kuan Yew Centre for Innovative Cities in the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD). She is a Member of the Presidential Council for Minority Rights and served as Singapore’s Ambassador to the United States from July 1996 to 14 July 2012.

In the Exhibition Hall you’ll find a great opportunity to explore a wide range of library products, new technologies, books and online services available to libraries and librarians. Approximately 100 exhibiting organisations will be on hand—covering more than 1000 square metres of floor space. Come to the opening and you’ll also get a chance to meet IFLA President-Elect Sinikka Sipilä, IFLA President Ingrid Parent, and IFLA’s Secretary General Jennefer Nicholson.

As usual, IFLA HQ Secretariat will almost entirely re-locate to the Conference Centre to personally assist delegates and IFLA Members with various issues.
Please come and find us in Room 332 to discuss membership opportunities, pick up voting documents for the General Assembly, and any other questions that you would like our help with!
IFLA also has a booth (F117) in the Exhibition Hall together with representatives for next year’s conference in Lyon, France.

The Newcomers session offers a brief introduction to various aspects of the IFLA congress and the IFLA organisation in an informal way. It is a great opportunity to start building and expanding your international professional network!
Two panel sessions led by IFLA Governing Board member Barbara Lison will give you a better idea of how to make the most out of the Conference programme and how to get involved in the IFLA organization.
Coffee and cake will be served at the beginning of the session from 8.30-9.00.
Be sure to pick up your "first timer" badge at the session!

In the overviews per day the main conference tracks are indicated with different colours. This year’s tracks are: Open Access and Digital Resources; Policy, Strategy and Advocacy; Users Driving Access and Services; Tools and Techniques and: Ideas, Innovations, Anticipating the New. Plan carefully the sessions you want to attend.

Representatives of the French National Committee will be present to give you information about Lyon and the Conference.

The Universal Decimal Classification (UDC) editorial team will hold its Annual IFLA Update meeting today. Members of the Editorial team will give a short presentation about UDC content development, translation services and the new Multilingual UDC Online. Colleagues working with, teaching or doing research on UDC are invited to join us.
This meeting will be an opportunity to hear more about the progress of the UDC Summary online, which is now available in 51 languages. There will also be more information about the forthcoming International UDC Seminar 2013 "Classification & Visualization: Interfaces to Knowledge" which will take place in the National Library of the Netherlands in The Hague, 24-25 October.
