Audience

This webinar is targeted towards librarians who work with or have an interest in collection development and management at university libraries. We hope to prompt thinking about the topic generally and consider how those who work in acquisitions/collections might integrate OER resources into their work. Anyone who would like to learn more about the relationship between OER and library collections is also welcome.

Ezra Shiloba Gbaje

Bio: Ezra Shiloba Gbaje is a Professor with the Department of Library and Information Science, Federal University Lokoja, Nigeria. He is the immediate past University Librarian of the University. His research interest include: Digital Information Systems and Services, Digital Preservation, Open Access, Digital Scholarship and Scholarly Communication. Contact: ezra.gbaje at fulokoja.edu . ng

Presentation outcomes: This presentation will focus on why libraries in Nigeria are motivated to participate in OER initiatives in Nigeria. Their roles in creating, collecting, facilitating and managing OER will be discussed. While the challenges hindering OER adoption and strategies on how to address them are also highlighted.

Cécile Swiatek Cassafieres

Cécile Swiatek Cassafieres

Bio: Cécile Swiatek Cassafieres is Director of the library of the University of Paris Nanterre, France. Member of the Executive Board of the European league of research libraries (libereurope.eu) and SPARCEurope. She takes a curious and critical look at Open Education issues through her work at SPARCEurope, OEGlobal and with the UNESCO.  Since 2021, she has been mandated as a permanent national expert on Open Educational Resources (OER) in the French International Open Science Network (ReiSo) for the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation (MESRI). Presentation outcomes: Cecile will sketch up the general OER definition(s) and landscape for libraries, focusing on UNESCO recommendation and the five areas of action. What opportunities do OERs when developing resources and collections? What is the role and expertise of libraries in integrating OERs to collections or to teaching & learning digital environment? Why, what and how can librarians position OERs in the library’s strategy?

Erin Fields

Bio: Erin Fields is the Open Education and  Scholarly Communications at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver campus. Erin is currently the Lead for the Council of Prairie and Pacific University Libraries (COPPUL) Open Education Working Group and was the Open Education Visiting Program Officer  for the Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL/ABRC) in 2019-2020. She is the recipient of the 2018 Award of Excellence in Open Education and the Open Education Research & Advocacy Fellowship with BCcampus. Contact: erin.fields at ubc . ca

Presentation outcomes: This session will provide an overview of the impact of faculty engagement and new publisher models on North American academic library collection development and management. Using the University of British Columbia as an example, this session will highlight the ways academic libraries are working against the many barriers to providing access to OER collections and resources.

Bio: Mira is an Academic Information Specialist at the University of Groningen Library (the Netherlands). She leads the Open Education pillar of the University’s Open Science program and is actively engaged in building services and infrastructure to support teachers in the area of open educational resources, open textbook publishing, and related copyright issues. How do you engage with open practices as a collection specialist to utilize the transformative potential of OER and respond to the challenges in your field? In this presentation, Mira Buist-Zhuk, an academic information specialist in OER at the University of Groningen Library, will outline the skill set from the UNESCO OER competence framework and how it relates to the effective use and integration of OER at our academic institutions. The good news?
