Government-run program will use $1 million Access to Learning Award to advance digital inclusion in Brazil’s most populous state
August 19, 2013, SEATTLE – The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation today presented its 2013 Access to Learning Award of $1 million to Acessa São Paulo, which works to ensure all São Paulo residents have free and easy access to computers and the Internet. Acessa is part of the government of São Paulo’s multipronged approach to help the most vulnerable lift themselves out of poverty.

Cherian George, a Singaporean writer and academic, is an Associate Professor at the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information, Nanyang Technological University. He serves as the Director of the Temasek Foundation - NTU Asia Journalism Fellowship. He is also an Adjunct Senior Research Fellow of the Institute of Policy Studies at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore. His main research interest is in media and politics, including the political economy of journalism, censorship and alternative media. Dr. George takes an active interest in media policy and media reform.

The IFLA WLIC 2013 Exhibition was officially opened by IFLA President-Elect Sinikka Sipilä on 18 August. Ms Sipilä welcomed all delegates and participants to explore the 1000 m2 exhibition area, a space for library partners and stakeholders to interact and share new technologies and initiatives from around the world. The 88 exhibitors include publishers, vendors, database companies and National Libraries. From 19 to 20 August between 12 noon and 2pm, delegates can also try various local cultural crafts and activities and learn more about the host nation Singapore.

IFLA delegates were given a glimpse of Singaporean culture through a series of multi-ethnic, beautifully harmonised performances: a Chinese dragon dance, rhythms from an array of traditional and modern percussion, a Chinese lion dance with a welcoming message in Singapore’s four official languages and beautiful dance steps that were distinctly Chinese, Indian and Malay all at the same time.
