Theme:
Knowledge in the Digital Age - Libraries and librarians are managing the digital transformation

Español | français

The IFLA Knowledge Management (KM) Section provides an international platform for professional communication and understanding of the significance of KM for libraries. It gives a voice to KM on a global scale and follows the developments in KM, promoting its practical implementation within the global library community.

The 2014 WLIC Conference

The annual IFLA World Library and Information Congress (WLIC) provides an opportunity to present innovative models, case studies and research.  Delegates and speakers from all parts of the world come together to discuss new developments and successful practices in libraries. The conference motto for the 2014 Conference in Lyon, France is: "Libraries, Citizens, Societies: Confluence for Knowledge".

The IFLA Knowledge Management Section invites librarians, information scientists, knowledge managers and professionals to submit proposals for papers to be presented in a 2-hour session at WLIC Lyon, France, 16-22 August 2014.

The KM Session Programme

“Knowledge in the Digital Age – Libraries and Librarians are Managing the Digital Transformation” is the KM Section’s theme for its 2014 Open Programme during the conference:

The digital transformation changes the production, distribution and use of knowledge in radical ways. The keywords are multimediality rather than textuality, interconnectness instead of linearity, immersivity as opposed to receptivity, the dominance of mobile user scenarios, the availability of gigantic masses of data as well as the increasing mixing of real and virtual worlds. How do you manage knowledge that no longer features as “collection”, as “publication” and clearly defined research “output” but as a continuously changing and, in principle, indefinitely interconnected flow of information? Moreover, who will be the future managers of this “new” kind of knowledge – big computing and data centres, scientific societies, commercial providers of cloud-based infrastructures or, after all, libraries, which have served as expert knowledge centres and storehouses of knowledge for centuries. Papers should approach these questions from different perspectives, not aiming at “fixed” answers but inspiring further thought and triggering lively discussion.

Reflecting the IFLA Trend Report 2013 we want to discuss how existing business models across many industries and information providers switch into the new information environment based on innovative devices in a semantic web and how Librarians are creating new roles for their relationships to knowledge exchange and knowledge management in the digital age.

Lyon’s congress theme "Libraries, Citizens, Societies: Confluence for Knowledge" creates a perfect opportunity for exchanging and sharing ideas and opinions about leveraging the production, organization, and dissemination of knowledge in the digital age, and the role that libraries and librarians are playing in the transformative and disruptive processes of shaping the networked knowledge society. We are looking for speakers who can highlight the KM open session theme for Lyon from a global and strategic perspective but also with a practical and end-user-oriented focus.
