5. Changi in World War II and Heartlands

Date: Wed, 21 August 2013
Time: 09:30 - 13:30
Price per Person: S$55.00

Travel back to the time of World War Two in this moving guided tour conducted in conjunction with the Changi Museum. Once the site of many prisoner-of-war camps during the Japanese Occupation, Changi has since gone down in history as a place of much pain, torture and human suffering. It is said that more Australian PoWs perished under incarceration than in battle itself. Whether it is on the Death Railway or the countless labour camps in Japan and Formosa (Taiwan), the Changi WWII trail commemorates the fight of brave men and women during battle and in internment.

You will visit Changi Chapel and Museum for a rich understanding of War and Occupation from the thoughtfully-designed galleries and personal artefacts. The coach will stop across old Changi Prison to view what remains of the former PoW and civilian internment camp. We will also stop outside Selarang Barracks where the horrific incident at the barracks square took place in 1942. Lastly we will drive through Changi Village, which still holds old world charm and stop at Changi Beach which commemorates the civilian massacre, Sook Ching. On the return journey, we will drive through Tampines New Town, a public housing estate to appreciate the contrast between old Singapore and the new heartlands.

What's included:

  • Guided tour with specialized Military Heritage Guide
  • Admission to Changi Chapel and Museum
