IFLA Network of Language AdvisersIFLA has seven official working languages - English, French, German, Russian and Spanish, with the recent additions of Arabic and Chinese. IFLA's policy is to provide a limited simultaneous interpretation service in these languages at the annual IFLA World Library and Information Congress. (The language of the host country is sometimes also used, if that is not one of the official working languages.) Conference papers are also translated into these working languages; the number translated depending upon resources available. IFLA officers and staff are responsible for obtaining translations of papers. Other meetings and seminars during the year may also require the use of some of the official working languages for translation or simultaneous interpretation, depending on the arrangements made by the organizers of these meetings. Publications of IFLA, whether issued by Headquarters, Core Activities, or by the various Divisions and Sections, may also appear in the official working languages if resources are found to make translations. IFLA has developed an informal network of language advisors. These are normally persons working in library, information and communication professions, who have a high level of fluency in two or more of the official working languages and who are willing to volunteer their services for translation and interpretation for IFLA activities. The exact nature of these services, the costs and the conditions under which they are carried out may need to be negotiated in each case. They may, for example, include quick response to queries on terminology; written translations of papers and reports; and consecutive or simultaneous translation at meetings.
