Libraries for Children and Young Adults Section

Established at IFLA's Congress in Brussels in 1955

Scope Statement

The Section's major purpose is to support the provision of the library service and reading promotion to children and young adults throughout the world.

Its main objectives are to promote international cooperation in the fields of library services to children and young adults, and to encourage the exchange of experience, education and training and research in all aspects of this subject. The Section's concerns include the provision of library services to all children and young adults in different cultures and traditions in cooperation with appropriate organizations and to adults interacting with children and young adults.

Partnership

The ICDL is a library for the world's children. Since its creation in 2002, the Section has been a partner in the development of this unique resource, which provides free access to children's books, in their original languages over the Internet. With children as design partners, an interdisciplinary team works with experts in children's literature from throughout the world to make available an expanding collection of full-text historic and contemporary children's books. The mission of the Library is to encourage a love of reading, foster a readiness to learn, and offer a response to the challenges of world illiteracy.

Projects

Coverage is international, although most of the studies come from North America. Abstracts are arranged in twelve categories and are alphabetical within each category by author's name.
