Scope

The Section of Biological and Medical Libraries representes and acts as a forum for special libraries concerned wityh all aspects of information dissemination and services in relation to the health sciences and biological sciences.

Meetings

The standing committee met during the Bangkok with 10 of the 12 members attending.

Projects

Directory of Health Sciences Libraries Catherine Petit and Renee Bush surveyed IFLA members for Health Sciences Libraries Directories and presented their results. The new Secretary, Rick Forsman, will work with IFLA staff to mount the information on IFLANET. The project is completed.

The site selection for the ICML 9 in 2005 was completed. Ysabel Bertolucci and Renee Bush reviewed 10 letters of intent, three complete bids and arranged for presentations to the committee in Bangkok. This project is completed.

Publications

Articles about IFLA and the section were written by Ranghild Lande and Ysabel Bertolucci for the EAHIL newsletter and the MLA News.

The brochure was translated into French and Spanish by Catherine Petit.

Conference Programmes

A workshop, "An Enlightened Citizen and his Health: Consumer Health Information Worldwide" was sponsored at IFLA in Bangkok. The speakers or papers were given by Carolyn Willard, "How to Establish a Successful Health Information Library in Your Community;" Mark Perkins, "Public Health Information and a Diverse Population," and Thomas Hill, "Medline Plus/Loansome Doc: Internet Health Services for Everyone." Attendance exceeded 60 people and many new ideas for section projects were discussed.

An Open Session, "The Convergence of the Health Information Community", attended by approximately 50 people heard a presentation on the International Congress of Medical Librarianship to be held in London in 2000 by Derek Law.
