Literacy and Reading Section

    Established in 1997
Previously called: "Reading Section"

Scope

The purpose of the Section is to provide a focal point for the study and discussion of the promotion of reading, print culture and electronic media, and of the integration of reading research and reading development activities into library service for all citizens.

It covers issues such as increasing the social awareness of the significance of reading and general literacy, functional literacy in various cultural settings and illiteracy in different milieus, teaching the encouragement of reading among young people and adults, readers' skills and reading habits, the interaction of audiovisual media and reading in the new electronic environment. The relationship between reading research and reading promotion and the role of libraries in lifelong literacy is considered significant in professional terms.

The Section is concerned with a range of activities that affect all types of libraries, library associations, and institutions related to reading and literacy development and practice. The Section works in cooperation with other IFLA Sections and a number of international reading and library associations, including the International Reading Association (IRA) and the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY).

Projects

  • International research on Cultures of Literacy
This survey was prepared by members of the International Reading Association (IRA), the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA) and the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL), working with a group of volunteers from Asia, Africa, Europe and North America
  • International Reading Survey: presentation of findings
This Survey was an international scoping survey of reader-centred service provision in public libraries, led by a member of the Reading Section
The development of these guidelines has been a major Section on Reading initiative in recent years. The purpose of the guidelines is to help libraries in all parts of the world plan and carry out programs that encourage and support literacy.
