The IFLA Bibliography Section  held a free webinar on Tuesday 30 April 2024 on the practicalities of building a national bibliography, exploring successful models from around the world.

About the webinar

Existing as unique entities within their countries, providing a permanent bibliographic record of their intellectual and cultural outputs, national bibliographies have histories of establishment and development and models of organization and operating. While there is no single model for national bibliography development, there are essential considerations that underpin this undertaking.

The webinar aims at delving into the frameworks and foundations of establishing and operating a national bibliography, drawing inspirations from established and successful models around the world, permitting to navigate diverse landscapes and settings.

About the presenters

Mathilde Koskas is the Head of the Books Section of the French National Bibliography (Bibliothèque nationale de France, Département du Dépôt légal), with 15 years’ experience in producing the national bibliography. She was the Chair of IFLA’s Bibliography Section and the Secretary of Division III (then H) between 2019 and 2023. She is currently a member of IFLA’s Cataloguing Section and co-chair of the working group on Universal Bibliographic Control of the Bibliography Section. Her work focuses on legal deposit and cataloguing of print and digital books, cataloguing standards and rules for National Bibliographies.

Jennifer B. Dimasaca is the Chief of the Bibliographic Services Division (BSD) at the National Library of the Philippines (NLP) with over two decades of experience in librarianship. She also dedicates her expertise to academia as an Associate Professorial Lecturer at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines, imparting her knowledge and experience to aspiring librarians. She has acquired advanced degrees in Library and Information Science and in Development Management, reflecting her commitment to continuous learning and professional development. At IFLA, Jennifer is member of the International Standard Bibliographic Description (ISBD) Review Group.

Marbilyn M. Egido is a licensed librarian and a professional teacher. Currently, she is a cataloguer at the National Library of the Philippines (NLP) in charge of organizing library materials, providing accurate record information, and maintaining the NLP’s catalogue. Prior to this, she has been a library and information science practitioner for over ten years, with experience in school and academic libraries. She earned her Bachelor’s degree and is completing her Master degree in Library and Information Science in Philippines Normal University, with a research interest in cataloging and classification. Marbilyn is member of different committees that conduct various programmes aimed at extending library services to communities and making a positive impact.

Florian Betz has been part of the Digital Services Department of the German National Library (DNB) since 2023. Prior to this, he worked at the DNB’s Section for Intellectual and Machine-based Subject Cataloguing and in projects related to the Integrated Authority File (GND). He holds a PhD in History.

Katharina Schöneborn has been part of the Digital Services Department of the German National Library (DNB) since 2014, prior to which she worked in the publishing and education sectors. She holds a PhD in Literature.

Eduardo da Silva Alentejo is an Associate Professor at the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO)), School of Librarianship. He holds a Master degree in Social Memory and Documentation from UNIRIO, and a PhD in Information Science from the University of Brazilia (Universidade de Brasília (UnB)). He is the developer of the web-based Brazilian Union Catalog.

Gabriel Alves Pereira is a founding member of the Brazilian Bibliographic Society (Sociedade Bibliogáfica Brasileira). He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Librarianship and a Master degree in History from the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO)). Since 2014, he has dedicated his studies and research to codicology and medieval illuminated manuscripts.
