Governing Board Elections 2011-2013
Statement of Candidacy
For the position of Governing Board Member 2011-2013
Buhle Mbambo Thata (South Africa)
Executive Director, University of South Africa Library Services,
Pretoria, South Africa
I have served as Chair of Division 5, Regional Activities, and a member of the IFLA Governing Board in 2009-2011. In that regard I have served on the IFLA Governing Board while representing the interests of Division 5. I have gained great understanding of the workings, capabilities and challenges that face our great Association. I now seek election for a two year term in order to put this worthwhile experience to good use.
In the period that I have been on the IFLA Governing Board, we have developed the IFLA Strategic Plan 2010-1015 and Implementation Plan. As a member of the IFLA/ALP Committee we have monitored the implementation of the Building Strong Library Associations programme. As a member for of the IFLA -FAIFE Committee I have participated in developing the FAIFE Action Plan. I have also served as member of the President-elect's theme development subcommittee. It has indeed been a busy and productive two years for me on the Board and a pleasure to have served and represented the Regional Activities Division.
It will be a great honor and privilege, to be elected to serve on the IFLA Governing Board for the next the two years 2011- 2013. In this capacity I will be serving the broader interests of IFLA, focusing on multiculturalism within IFLA, leadership development and information issues from developing countries. Furthermore, I will pay particular focus on the growth of the Building Strong Library Associations Programme because Library Associations are critical for the development of the profession globally.
I will contribute my time, knowledge and passion for libraries to the work of the Governing Board.
