Social Science Libraries Section Program
The Milan Conference is almost here and this year indicates a spectacular venue and excellent programming to match by the Social Science Libraries Standing Committee. Chairman, Steve Witt said, "...we have an interesting panel that will address the role of social science libraries in preserving cultural heritage, covering professional development; work with cultural organizations, and [a] major digital library initiative." This primary session for the conference will be given the afternoon of Thursday, 27 August. Ralf Depping, Germany, assisted with this program and our newest committee member, "Maria" Elena Dorta-Duque, Cuba is one of the speakers. The Committee hopes to have these papers translated into other IFLA languages.
Other sessions that the Committee is associated with this year in Milan include the Division of Special Libraries, Monday, 24 August, with introductions handled by our own Chair, Steve Witt. This session is entitled "From Cultures to Sacred Books: Modern functions of Libraries in the religious traditions of Mediterranean Civilizations." The Division of Special Libraries, along with Geography and Map Libraries and Science and Technology Libraries are supporting another session on "Cultural heritage preserved: the role of digital maps," to be held on Tuesday, 25 August. Details of all of the programs are included in this newsletter.
Finally our Standing Committee Business Meetings will convene on Saturday, 22 August and Thursday, 27 August. See inside for the Draft Agenda for those two meetings (page 10).
Please attend our sessions and support our Standing Committee and you are also welcome to attend our business meetings as an Observer. Additionally, we are always looking for new members and would welcome your participation. It is easier than you think to become involved and become a member of the Social Science Libraries Standing Committee. Come and see!
