Marta Terry — Legend of the Caribbean

Marta TerryIn 1980, the 46th IFLA conference was held in Manila, Philippines. For the first time, two librarians were participating from Cuba. One year later, they decided to attend the Conference in Leipzig and submit their application for IFLA Membership. One of the Cuban delegates was Marta Terry.

IFLA must have made an impression on her, because 30 years later, Marta is still with us!  One has to be terribly young and/or very novice to IFLA not to know who Marta Terry is. She was a pioneer of Cuban representation at IFLA and a supporter of the development of librarianship in the Caribbean and Latin America as well.

Librarians for the Future

With the title “As for the future, your task is not to foresee it, but to enable it”, words taken from the famous literate Antoine de Saint-Exupery, Professor Derek Law began his presentation showing that in the future the librarian’s task is not predictable.  To explain this, he uses results from IBM research, models based on famous persons and key characteristics for the future librarian.  He initiated his speech by talking about the enterprise of the future, based on an IBM research.

Innovative librarians have established sister library programs with other schools. The students exchange emails and information with peers in other cities in the United States. Other school librarians teach library instruction using numerous online research resources.
