Puerto Rico flagPopulated for centuries by aboriginal peoples, the island was claimed by the Spanish Crown in 1493 following Christopher Columbus' second voyage to the Americas. In 1898, after 400 years of colonial rule that saw the indigenous population nearly eliminated and African slave labor introduced, Puerto Rico was ceded to the United States (US) as a result of the Spanish-American War.

Participation in IFLA/OCLC fellowship program was the best professional experience that I have (to date) ever had. During the course of my studies, I had the luck to work and/or volunteer in almost every type of library setting. My professional development first started with a job at American Corners—Belgrade, Serbia (which included everyday work with customers and organizing cultural programs for all ages).

LUIS MOLINA-CASANOVA is Resident Filmmaker and professor at the Communications Department of the University of the Sacred Heart in San Juan, Puerto Rico. His academic degrees are in Marketing and Architecture, from the University of Puerto Rico and in Communications and Film production from the University of Madrid.  He has successfully taken the Puerto Rican experience and its literature into the film industry.  Apart from his more than 30 years of teaching at the University of the Sacred Heart, he has taught courses on filmmaking at the University of Guadalajara, in Mexico, and at Harvard University.

Sjoerd has always willingly taken on the challenges presented by this, and throughout has provided valuable support to the Governing Board, Professional Committee, professional units, members, our corporate and other partners, and staff.
