I was very happy when I heard that IFLA 2012 will be in Finland. I am Anne Ala-Honkola, the chief librarian at Töölö library. My library is waiting for basic renovation which was planned to start this year. However, the renovation was postponed, giving me the wonderful opportunity to work as a volunteer at IFLA and to help colleagues and to learn about the newest innovations in libraries. I´m sure that I will be inspired by all of you!

Library Boulevard – Finnish Edition

During the Library Boulevard the conversations were lively and people talked about the different types of projects that Finnish libraries are working on right now. All the presentations were great, but the biggest star was a reading assistance dog named Börje! People lined up to take pictures of this extra cute dog.

Peter von Bagh Peter von Bagh is a film historian, a professor of film history at The Helsinki University of Arts, a filmmaker, and author of more than 30 books on film, history and popular arts, including The History of World Cinema (1975/98) and a major study on the life and work of the world-renowned Finnish film director Aki Kaurismäki, now published in five languages. Von Bagh earned a Doctor in Political Science and has worked as a television and radio producer, a book publisher, and film director, including 1997’s 16-part Oi kallis Suomenmaa, (A History of Finland), and Sininen laulu (Song of Finland)—a 12-hour program on the history of arts in Finland which would became a Finlandia prize winning book in 2007.

Helena RantaProfessor Helena Ranta is a Finnish forensic dentist who gained notoriety particularly through her involvement in several forensic investigations of international conflicts. IFLA Market: Library Boulevard – Finnish Edition

Finnish libraries will be introducing themselves at the conference—not just in the lecture halls. The route from the convention centre entrance to the main floor will be an actual Library Boulevard. Along it one will see up to 50 intriguing presentations from the world of Finnish libraries, with some additional presentations from Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Russia. On the main floor Finnish libraries will be assembling the Libraries.fi exhibition stand, which will be offering information, working examples, and varies hints and bulletins.
