Foreword

The Resolutions of the International Conference on Cataloguing Principles, Paris, 1961, as well as approving the Statement of Principles upon which the delegates had voted, proposed a range of international projects aimed at the unification and standardization of cataloguing procedures.

Resolution IVB noted the desirability of establishing certain lists of uniform headings – for example, of anonymous classics, of names of classical Greek and Latin authors – and proposed the compilation of a restricted number of such lists by way of experiment. One of the background papers for the conference had been concerned with the cataloguing of liturgies and religious texts, and during the conference there had been the opportunity for a Sectional Group meeting to discuss in more depth the particular problems of dealing with this kind of material.

An international project to establish uniform headings for liturgical works seemed appropriate, both because it was in accordance with the ICCP Resolutions and because liturgical works were particularly suited to this treatment, for the following reasons:

  1. liturgical works are diffuse, appearing in many editions and translations, and in need of uniform titles to facilitate cataloguing;
  2. in spite of manifold variations on title-pages there are well-established official or conventional titles which can form a solid basis for the compilation of uniform titles;
  3. the scope of liturgical works is limited and relatively well-defined and allows for effective consideration by a small working group;
  4. various earlier works are available for evaluation and consultation.1

The establishment of a Working Group on Uniform Headings for Liturgical Works was discussed at the IFLA General Council meeting in Moscow in 1970, and in May 1972 the Working Group was formally constituted under the chairmanship of Dr. Peter Baader of the Deutsche Bibliothek in Frankfurt am Main.

When the Group finally commenced work in July 1972, several decisions had to be made regarding the scope and coverage of the Group's work. As the question of main entry forms part of the more comprehensive problem of entry under corporate body, and, as this problem was being thoroughly analysed in Eva Verona's study on corporate authorship2, the Working Group decided to concentrate on the compilation of a list of uniform titles. It was also agreed that it would be inadvisable to attempt to deal with the whole range of liturgical works, and it was decided to deal first with the Latin liturgical books of the Catholic church which could be adequately treated by a small specialist group.

As is customary with IFLA Working Groups, working papers were prepared by the Chairman and circulated to Group members, who returned comments, which were incorporated into the draft list. By this procedure the opinions within the Group moved to a substantial consensus about general questions as well as about the structure and wording of the List. The final text was completed in June 1975 and the Chairman was able to report on the Group's work to the IFLA Committee on Cataloguing during one of its sessions in Oslo in August 1975. Comments on the working papers were also received from interested colleagues and institutions to whom they were circulated, and special mention must be made of the contribution of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in Munich and, in particular Mr. P, Gleixner. It was originally hoped that the Vatican Library would participate in the work of the Group, but unfortunately, its library staff were already heavily committed to other activities: it was, however, consulted at various stages of the work.

In more detailed study of the scope of the Group's work it was clear that the List should only contain uniform titles for liturgical books in the strict sense of the word, i.e. excluding prayer books for private use and similar publications (cf. exact definition of scope in the Introductory Notes). It was also agreed, not without hesitation, that liturgical books dating from before the Council of Trent (1546 – 1563), such as the Sacramentarium Gregorianum and the Ordines Romani, should not be included. The Council of Trent prescribed the publication of editions typicae of single liturgical books, and this marks a turning-point in the history of liturgical books of the Catholic church. Before its standardizing influence many of the texts existed only in manuscript form and were of an individual nature, and might, therefore, be sought rather under the editor or the title of the edition. The uniform titles of the List may be used, too, for pre-tridentine books which have continued to exist after the Council (e.g. for a post-tridentine Breviarium or Missale), It also seemed practical to include new or revised liturgical books published after the Second Vatican Council (l962~l966), as official Latin titles which may serve as uniform titles are available for most of them.

Before establishing uniform titles for single works decisions also had to be made as to language, variants and books which appear as parts of major books:

  1. Language: In the interests of international applicability it was decided to use the official Latin language of the liturgies. The Latin titles are familiar to most users of liturgical material and do not differ greatly from vernacular forms;
  2. Variants: Latin liturgical books frequently appear in variant forms for single rites, dioceses, churches, monasteries, religious orders and – after the Second Vatican Council – adaptations for linguistic areas. It was the opinion of the Group that these variants should be indicated in the heading, as is done in most cataloguing codes, as follows:

    • Variants for rites which show substantial variation are indicated by the addition of the relevant Latin adjective as an integral part of the title (e.g. Missale romanum, Breviarium ambrosianum).
      All other kinds of variants are given unconnected additions:
      the name of the locality for dioceses. churches. monasteries and other localities. In accordance with the ICCP Statement of Principles the name of the locality is given in the original language, e.g. Missale (Amiens), Missale (Milano); or
      the name of the religious order and, as the case may be, of its regional subdivision, preferably in Latin, e.g., Rituale (Ordo Fratrum Minorum), Proprium missae (Ordo Sancti Benedicti, Congregatio Helvetica); or an addition consisting of the word Versio and the appropriate Latin adjective for the language for post-conciliar adaptations. e.g. Liturgia horarum (Versio Polonica), Ordo Baptismi Parvulorum (Versio Gallica).
      A compilation of the most common language adjectives and filing terms designating religious orders precedes the List (see p.2-3).
  3. Parts: Many liturgical books of the Roman rite are separate editions of parts of major books. Those parts which have gradually acquired, or have had from the beginning, an individual character have been given their own uniform titles, while parts without an autonomous character have been included under the uniform title of the whole book. For instance, the Canon missae, the Graduale, the Hymnarium, the Kyriale and other parts of the pre-conciliar Missale have their own uniform titles. while Missale romanum is used as the uniform title for editions of the Commune sanctorum, the Institutio generalis Missalis romani and the Praefationes. The treatment of parts of major liturgical books in the majority of codes and catalogues seems to be based on a similar distinction. although difficulties of demarcation do sometimes arise. However, the whole book and its parts may be linked by cross-references.

The organization of the List aims to provide the maximum of useful information for the non-specialist cataloguer. The uniform titles which are arranged alphabetically are connected by references indicating the relationships between major books and their parts and variant titles of single editions. Short descriptions of contents of the individual books have been added to help the cataloguer.

It is hoped that the List will prove a useful and practical tool in solving problems encountered in the cataloguing of Latin liturgical works and that it will also serve as a model for future lists covering liturgical works of other religions.

Note to the Second revised edition

The usefulness of the List to librarians in this specialist field has been shown by the fact that by the beginning of 1981 the stock of copies of the original edition was nearly exhausted. The opportunity was taken, therefore, not to reprint but to prepare a revised edition.

The new text includes some corrections, amendments and additions; footnotes have been added to point to the alternative solutions which are provided in the Anglo-American cataloguing rules, 2nd edition 1978 (AACR2) (Rules 25.22A 2, 25.23B).

Introductory Notes

PURPOSE

To provide a list of uniform titles for the official liturgical works of the Latin rites of the Catholic Church from the Council of Trent (1546 – 1563) to the present day.

SCOPE

The List includes works which:

  1. Contain instructions (rubrics) and/or texts for official church services:
  2. Have been officially approved or are proposed by or commonly used within a religious community.

But, the Liber usualis (21) and Liber usualis ofjicii (22) are included for practical reasons. even though they do not fulfil condition (b) above.

The List does not include:

  1. Unofficial collections of prayers for private or group use;
  2. Works for local use which cannot be regarded as local variants of official liturgical works, e.g. hymnals for single dioceses;
  3. Pre-tridentine liturgical works.

ORGANIZATION

An alphabetical list, consisting of numbered uniform titles, with additional material, and unnumbered cross-references.

Entries of uniform titles include one or more of the following elements:

  1. Wording of the uniform titles (supplemented if necessary by the additions for variants);
  2. A short statement of the contents of die book3 : where there has been a change of title or a new title since the Second Vatican Council (1962 -1965), this is indicated by "preconciliar" or 'post-conciliar" respectively;
  3. Uniform titles of variants: the Roman variant as the most common, and, for the Roman rite, the basic text first. The adjective romanus forms part of the uniform title when generally used in citing. In the case of both pre-and post-conciliar books the variants for each period are distinguished where necessary. Variants for single religious orders are described by the addition of their official name, variants for single dioceses and localities by the addition of the name of the See in the vernacular. Vernacular post-conciliar versions appear in the form (Versio. . .) followed by the corresponding adjective in Latin (for list, see below) e.g. (Versio Anglica);
  4. A statement "Part of" if the book is part of another book contained in the List;
  5. A statement "Other titles" for other titles which occur frequently. Cross references are made from these other titles;
  6. Cross-references to parts which are given uniform titles of their own, headed "Parts with uniform titles";
  7. Description of parts which are not given uniform titles in the List. Cross references are made from these descriptions;
  8. "See also " references to uniform titles of related books.

For other religious orders the official Latin names in the Annuario Pontificio are to be used. For orders of a regional or local character a name in the vernacular is to be preferred if given in the Annuario Pontificio, e.g. Soeurs Franciscaines de la Miséricorde de Luxembourg.

Apostolicus, canonicus, candidus, sacer and similar honorary adjectives at the beginning of the name are omitted.
