Unshelving Voices: Empowering Libraries Against Censorship

On August 6-7, 2024, the “Unshelving Voices” symposium at UNAM in Mexico City brought together a diverse group of presenters and participants from around the world to discuss and tackle the pressing issue of censorship in libraries. Hosted by the MEXINFO and UNAM organizers, this event was a resounding success, thanks to the insightful contributions and active engagement of all involved. “Unshelving Voices” was a collaboration of the IFLA (International Federal of Library Associations) groups including the Advisory Committee on Freedom of Access to Information and Freedom of Information (FAIFE), the LGBTQ+ Special Interest Group, the School Libraries Section, and the Management of Library Associations Section (MLAS).

The LGBTQ Users group is aimed at professionals in libraries and documentation centers to strengthen their skills in addressing LGBTQ+ users information needs. It thus creates tools to enhance professional practice and inspire the community. Among them, a repository has been set up to help librarians build LGBTQ+ collections by easily locate places where to find reliable resources. The document is a work in progress and is intended to be participatory. We hope for collective goodwill to identify relevant resources: professional blogs, bookstores, specialized social media libraries, working groups in professional associations in as many languages as possible... Also, if you are aware of a rich and interesting resource , do not hesitate to send it to us so that we can enrich this directory!

Libraries and their staff increasingly find themselves navigating challenges related to intellectual freedom, censorship, and intolerance towards diverse perspectives, especially evident in instances of LGBTQ+ book bans and restrictions on library programs. The IFLA Code of Ethics for Librarians and other Information Professionals underscores the librarian's duty to provide unrestricted access to information, promote inclusivity, and eliminate discrimination, emphasizing equal rights for all, irrespective of various characteristics.
