Inclusiveness through Openness, an IFLA WLIC 2023 Satellite Conference at Erasmus University Rotterdam, The Netherlands, from 18-19 August 2023.

The challenges and opportunities of open access publishing are great and the urgency greater than ever. Please join us for a short conference in Rotterdam this August [immediately before the World Library and Information Congress of IFLA] that will bring together perspectives from all over the world to concentrate on how to make the promise of “open” a reality.

“Inclusiveness through Openness” is the theme, with a keynote address by Sabelo Mhlambi (US/Zambia), a renowned thinker and advocate for the principle that the value of open access will be most richly achieved if we — all players in the library and information community — succeed in making it a means to a more globally inclusive end. A dozen diverse and wide-ranging papers will flesh out and animate the discussion. Bringing the riches of the scholarly, scientific, and library publishing world to the benefit of every underserved population is within our reach as never before, but it will take vision and effort to keep from making the routinization of new business models simply reproduce the old privileges and exclusions.

We meet at Erasmus University in Rotterdam on 18-19 August for a day and a half of energizing presentations and lively discussion. We expect that all participants will share in a lively discussion about advocacy and innovation resulting in messages to share at WLIC and in the months afterward.
