Today, IFLA released the following statement regarding the attack on the offices of Charlie Hebdo last week in Paris.
This update reflects the many changes that have taken place in the world over the last ten years and reinforces the vital role of library and information services in ensuring equitable access to the Internet and its services in support of freedom of access to information and freedom of expression.
Increased Internet censorship and surveillance has been an emerging trend over the last decade. Since 2013’s leaks regarding online spying by various security agencies, the global dimensions and potential of ubiquitous surveillance have become evident to the global public.
The leaks of Edward Snowden have raised a range of different responses and reactions against ubiquitous surveillance and led to calls to strengthen users’ rights and protection on the Internet.
