Tools for Evidence-Based Storytelling: Reflective Practice and the UN Sustainable Development Goals in Libraries

This presentation explores how reflective practice can be used to share the impact of Library services using the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a framework. Emilia and Carmel share examples of the University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ) Library’s approach to reflection as a key part of evidence-based practice. This includes using storytelling that engages staff and students in reflecting on contributions to a more inclusive, sustainable, and equitable future, highlighting the impact that libraries can have in their local communities within a global framework.
Carmel O’Sullivan is the University Librarian at the University of Southern Queensland and has significant experience in the library and information sector, ranging from pioneering a new national role for a top tier law firm, to managing a broad portfolio of cultural services for a local government, and roles at several Australian Universities. She has extensive experience in leading organisational change processes and library building and renovation projects. Carmel strives to build teams that focus on improving the student experience and supporting faculty while having fun, understanding their purpose, and reaching their potential.
Emilia Bell is the Coordinator (Evidence Based Practice) at the University of Southern Queensland Library. In this role they facilitate and contribute to developing an evidence-based library culture, including through practice-based research and reflective practice. Emilia’s professional experience includes academic and school libraries. They are also a PhD student at Curtin University. Emilia’s current research interests span evidence-based library practice, academic librarianship, and open research.
