Libraries included in the recently published Finnish National Development Plan

    On 2 February 2017, Finland published its National Development Plan for implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals to achieve the UN Agenda 2030. The plan includes libraries. Libraries are acknowledged in the context of the action plan to prevent hate speech and racism and to promote social inclusion: “The role of public libraries as promoters of active citizenship, cultural diversity and democracy shall be strengthened”.

    IFLA signs agreements with 50 countries to work towards getting Libraries included in National Development Plans

      IFLA’s capacity-building International Advocacy Programme (IAP) is now fully underway. “50 countries have joined IFLA in this journey, and are already making progress towards promoting and supporting the role libraries can play in the planning and implementation of the UN 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)”, IFLA President Donna Scheeder.

        Universal Access to Information, Today and Every Day

          Libraries have always been about preserving and giving access to information. At all levels, they readily work with other actors in order to achieve this. The first International Day for the Universal Access to Information is the occasion for a joint statement between IFLA and the International Publishers Association (IPA). This sets out areas where we can progress, together, towards this key objective.

            The United Nations (UN) hosted the Summit for the adoption of the 2030 Agenda at the end of September in New York. IFLA has been actively involved in the process of creating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) over the last years and has advocated for access to information, culture, access to Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and universal literacy, all of which can be found in the 2030 Agenda, throughout this time.

              On 2 August 2015, after more than three years of negotiations and intense involvement from many stakeholders, including IFLA, the Member States of the United Nations agreed a final version of the post-2015 Development Agenda – now known as 2030 Agenda.
